Will hot water enter my cold water line?
No. The Metlund D'MAND System will automatically shut off once hot water reaches the furthest fixture. The zone valve will close and prevent hot water from entering the cold water line.
What happens if I open a cold water fixture while the pump is running?
You will receive cold water flowing out of the tap.
If I install the Metlund D'MAND System under my sink, will my shower have hot water too?
In most cases, yes. By filling the main line with hot water, it will quickly deliver hot water to any fixture plumbed directly off of that main line.
Do I have to install the Metlund D'MAND System at the furthest fixture from the water heater?
In most situations, it is best to install the Metlund System at the furthest fixture from the water heater. By doing this, it will always fill the main line with hot water providing hot water to any fixture plumbed off of the main line.
How much space will I lose under my sink?
In most cases, the Metlund D'MAND System is instal LED behind the sink trap. Dimensions: 11" long X 7deep X 7" tall.
What if someone presses the button and hot water is already in the line?
The lockout feature will register that there is already hot water in the line and will prevent the D'MAND System from operating.
How long does it take for hot water to arrive?
In most cases, hot water will arrive approximately 4 times quicker. This can vary depending upon piping material, inside diameter, length of run from water heater to point of installation, and the number of changes in direction (90 and 45 degree turns of the pipe run.)
Where does the cold water go?
The cold or ambient temperature water standing in the hot water line is re-circulated into the cold water side back to the water heater during the pumping process.
Is a System needed for each fixture?
In most cases no. As long as your fixtures are plumbed off the main line, one D'MAND System will benefit your entire home if instal LED at the furthest fixture.
Can I install the Metlund D'MAND System myself?
Yes. The price (of any system that ends in "PF" or "PFR") includes a "no soldering" kit for easy installation. This kit includes everything necessary to easily install a system to homes with copper plumbing. If you do not have copper pipes, we can supply you with proper fittings for your situation. How can I determine how my home is plumbed or where my furthest fixture is in my home?
Determine the most important long hot water wait. Turn the hot water on at this location, and time the wait for the hot water to arrive, then shut the water off. Now go back through your home towards the water heater testing other locations to see how long it takes to receive hot water. If you receive hot water more quickly than before, this is the benefit you will receive from the Metlund D'MAND System. (This test must be performed when both the hot and cold water lines are at ambient temperatures.
Will it work with solar heating?
Yes. As long as there are no check valves restricting flow back to the water heater in the cold water line.
Will it work with water softeners?
Yes. When there is a demand for hot water, the cold water line will be purged because we always mix hot with cold to reach a comfortable temperature.
What size System do I need?
Model # S-50 applies to homes waiting one minute or less for hot water to arrive at the furthest fixture. The Model # S-70T System applies to most residential home applications. If you are waiting 3 minutes or more for hot water at your furthest fixture and the distance is 75'' or more from the water heater, you may need to purchase the larger and more powerful S-02 Model.
Can I turn my water heater to a lower setting?
Yes. In most cases, we find the homeowner has set the water heater at a higher setting than necessary because of the inability to receive hot water in a timely manner. By installing the Metlund D'MAND System, the circulator delivers hot water to the fixtures very quickly, thus not allowing for heat loss during travel time. The EPA standard suggests water heater temperature setting at 120°.
Can I install multiple buttons?
Yes. You may splice as many push buttons into the low voltage wire as needed.
What are other ways to activate the Metlund D'MAND System?
